Practice Makes Perfect!
Learning to draw—or leveling up the skills you already have—is a lifelong adventure. The more you practice, the better you’ll become (yes, practice really does make perfect!).
The more you practice, the better you’ll become (yes, practice really does make perfect!). Along the way, something magical happens: your very own style begins to emerge, and you’ll start to see it pop up in other areas of your creative life too.
Muscle Memory Magic:
The more you draw, the more your hands remember what to do. I’m often asked how I can draw from memory without looking—and the answer is muscle memory! Repeating shapes and lines again and again helps your brain and hand work together. When you remember, you can create with confidence and ease.
Draw with Purpose:
Be intentional while you draw. Notice where lines cross and angles meet, play with size and scale, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Give yourself time—before you know it, these thoughtful choices will feel completely natural and second nature.
Take Your Sketchbook Everywhere!
You never know when a great idea will pop into your head or when you’ll spot something just begging to be drawn. Keeping a sketchbook close lets you capture ideas, doodles, and subjects you want to explore later. The size is totally up to you—just make sure it’s easy to grab at a moment’s notice! I often sketch while waiting for appointments or meeting someone. Those little pockets of time add up and help me stay focused, even on the busiest days. And don’t forget to bring your sketchbook along on family vacations—sketch the places you visit and the memories you’re making along the way!
Stay Committed to You.
If creativity matters to you, then it is important. Even if you don’t plan on an art career, nurturing your creative genius will serve you well in so many ways. Being creative builds problem-solving skills and helps you see life from fresh, imaginative angles. Sketching sharpens your powers of observation—you’ll start noticing tiny details and seeing shapes everywhere. It even boosts your memory (hello, muscle memory power!). Keep showing up, keep sketching, and keep creating—you’re growing more than you realize.
