Every Sunday I sketch and journal the message our pastor shares with us during our church services. I find in doing this I stay more focused and my mind has less time to "wander". I have been doing this for about 10 years and I love looking back and seeing how God has spoken to me during these times. I often finish these sketches throughout the following week - usually in watercolor as that is my medium of choice. I'm never worried about them being a piece of art or - heaven forbid - perfect. I focus more on what God is saying to me while I am listening to what is being said. It's also a great way for me to continue pondering throughout the week what I have heard, review the scriptures discussed and pray about what God is teaching me. If you love sketching or doodling, you might try this some time. Keep it simple and just listen to how God is speaking to you. Leave perfection at the door when you start and see how your imagination pours onto the pages. I bet you'll be surprised at what shows up in your sketchbook week after week!
